ChillSense for cafes & bakeries

Cafes and bakeries are the most under-monitored cold-chain operators in Australia, and the most exposed to a single fridge failure: when the display fridge fails on a Sunday morning, the loss is high-margin stock and reputation, not just dollars on a balance sheet.

ChillSense fits a typical cafe in an afternoon, and pays back the subscription roughly the first time it warns you about a fridge before stock is lost.

A typical cafe deployment

Three sensors across the three highest-risk assets, one hub on a back-of-house power outlet:

Sensor Asset Why monitor it
1 Front-of-house display fridge Door opens constantly; high-margin stock; visible to customers if anything looks off.
2 Under-counter prep fridge on the line High stock value; out of sight behind the line.
3 Upright or chest freezer A long thaw cycle ruins a lot of frozen stock fast.

That maps cleanly onto our Cafe Pack + matching 3-sensor monitoring subscription (monthly or yearly billing, picked at checkout). The hardware is a one-off ~$237.50 (GST exclusive) and the monitoring is $12/mo or $120/yr.

Why this configuration

  • One hub is enough for almost every cafe footprint. Hubs do not have a per-hub subscription, so if you have a far-corner cool room you can drop in a second hub without changing the subscription.
  • Three sensors hit the three real risks (display, prep, freezer) without over-monitoring the bar fridge or the ice cream cabinet that holds $80 of stock.
  • The 3-sensor subscription is one billing line instead of three singleton lines on your invoice - cheaper to administer than three separate $4 charges.

If you have more or fewer assets than three, mix and match - see the pricing page for the per-sensor maths.

The day-to-day a cafe owner actually wants

Most cafe owners we talk to want the same thing: a way to stop thinking about whether the fridges are okay, except when they aren't.

  • Mornings: Owner opens the dashboard bookmark on their phone over coffee, confirms everything is green, gets on with the day.
  • During service: Nobody on the floor thinks about ChillSense unless a sensor sends an SMS. If one does, the floor staff tap the link, acknowledge, pick "Door left open - now closed" or "Investigated - asset OK" from the list, done.
  • End of month: The HACCP report PDF appears in the dashboard. Forward to the food safety officer; file in the records folder.

Compare with the alternative: a paper log on a clipboard hanging off the side of each fridge that staff forget to fill in for a week, only to back-fill the entire month the day before an audit. ChillSense exists to replace that.

How this fits with cafe food safety plans

Most state food safety regimes for cafes are built around:

  • A written food safety plan covering CCPs (cold storage being the obvious one).
  • Records of cold-chain temperatures with corrective actions when things went out of range.
  • Records of cleaning, hand-wash compliance, and incoming stock checks.

ChillSense covers the cold-chain records and corrective-action evidence directly. You still keep the rest of the plan by hand - the HACCP reports feature page is explicit about what ChillSense does and does not replace.

Bakeries: humidity matters as much as temperature

Bakeries get one extra benefit out of ChillSense that cafes don't: humidity monitoring on the dough proofing fridge (or the chocolate temper cabinet, or the cake display case). The ChillSense sensor measures temperature and humidity on every reading, so any asset whose product quality depends on humidity gets two-for-one monitoring without extra hardware.

If you bake on-premise and currently use a separate humidity logger, you can decommission it.

Common questions cafe owners ask

Do I need to install software?

No. The dashboard runs in any browser and the hardware ships pre-configured for your account. See the FAQ.

What if the internet drops out?

Sensors keep recording and the hub catches up when connectivity returns. Short outages do not cause data loss. See the FAQ.

Can I move sensors if I rearrange the kitchen?

Yes - sensors move with assets, history stays with assets, the dashboard updates automatically.

Can my staff use it without logging in?

For alerts, yes. Staff receive an SMS with a signed link to the mobile action page; they don't need a login to acknowledge an incident.

What about my back-room freezer that's a long way from the hub?

If signal is patchy, add a second hub - it's hardware-only, no extra subscription. See Placing sensors.
