Setting up ChillSense
Most setup is done for you before your hardware arrives. This guide walks through the six steps you complete on site - typically 20-30 minutes for a first install.
Before you start
Have these ready:
- Your ChillSense welcome email with login details.
- Power outlets near each hub location.
- Wi-Fi network name and password (if your hubs use Wi-Fi).
- A list of the cold assets you want to monitor (fridges, freezers, cool rooms, display cabinets, and similar).
Step 1
Sign in to your dashboard
- Open the link in your welcome email.
- Sign in with the email address that received the invitation.
- If prompted, set your password and confirm any contact details.
If you have multiple sites, you will see a site selector at the top of the dashboard.
Step 2
Deploy and connect your hub
Each hub is labelled for your account.
- Place the hub in the area where you want it to collect data.
- Plug it in.
- Wait for the hub to start up.
- If prompted in the dashboard, complete the hub claim/setup flow (Wi-Fi details and claim code) for that site.
- Confirm the hub shows as online in the dashboard before pairing sensors.
A hub typically covers sensors within the same building or zone. Walls, fridges, and metal racking can reduce range, so place hubs centrally where possible.
Hub LED guide (during setup)
Use the hub LED to quickly confirm setup progress:
| LED behaviour | What it means |
|---|---|
| Slow blue breathing | Hub is unprovisioned and waiting for setup |
| Slow yellow blink | Hub is trying to join Wi-Fi |
| Slow cyan blink | Hub is on Wi-Fi and connecting to cloud services |
| Slow green breathing | Hub is online and operating normally |
Step 3
Pair and install your sensors
- Unbox one sensor and insert the batteries (or remove the battery tab if pre-installed).
- Bring that sensor close to the target hub for first pairing.
- Wait for the sensor to appear in the dashboard.
- Move the sensor to the asset you want to monitor.
- Repeat for the next sensor.
Sensor pairing LED signals
When pairing sensors near the hub:
- 1 dim magenta flash — hub has seen a close-range candidate sensor.
- 3 magenta flashes — sensor onboarding is complete and the sensor has been added.
If a sensor does not appear after fifteen minutes, see Troubleshooting.
Step 4
Name and assign your sensors
Use the dashboard to give each sensor a friendly name that matches the asset it is monitoring — for example "Front display fridge" or "Walk-in freezer 2". This makes alerts and reports much easier to understand.
You can also organise sensors into sites, areas, and assets to match how your business is set up.
Step 5
Configure alerts and contacts
Once sensors are reporting reliably, set:
- Temperature thresholds for each sensor.
- Notification contacts (email and mobile).
- Who should be notified for which assets.
See Alerts and notifications for full details on thresholds, escalation, and avoiding alert fatigue.
Step 6
Confirm everything is working
After 24 hours, check that:
- All sensors are reporting.
- Dashboards show realistic temperature and humidity readings.
- A test alert (if you triggered one) reached the correct people.
If anything looks off, contact us through Getting support.
Hardware in place? Next, get the placement right.
A sensor is only as good as where it sits. The next guide shows the placement patterns we recommend for fridges, freezers, and cool rooms.
